Many amongst RMC members are working in this grade. New Contract for which a ballot was recently held by BMA has been accpted by a majority of 60% of those who voted.

Are you aware of this new contract and what it means for you?

Recent News from BMA......

The SAS Committee met recently to consider the results of the recent vote and accepted the new SAS contract on behalf of UK SAS doctors. You can see more about the SAS contract vote here: http://www.bma.org.uk/ap.nsf/Content/SASvote

The new contract will be offered on an optional basis from 1 April 2008 to doctors / dentists in the following grades:
staff grades, associate specialists, senior clinical medical officers, clinical medical officers, clinical assistants and hospital practitioners

What should you do now?

Work will now begin on implementation and trusts are expected to write to all SAS doctors asking for expressions of interest. You will have 12 weeks from receipt of this letter from your trust to express an interest in the new contract. This does not commit you to accepting the new contract but guarantees back pay to 1 April 2008 if you do.
SAS doctors must consider whether they would like to apply to the new contract. You can use the BMA ready reckoner and should be familiar with the summary of the contract - both of which are available here: http://www.bma.org.uk/ap.nsf/Content/SASdocumentation1007
If expressing an interest SASC would suggest that you should begin diary planning exercises to aid you in job planning discussions
If you are eligible to apply to regrade to the AS grade you should do so as soon as possible
SASC will work on producing further guidance to assist you in assimilation

BMA members can contact askBMA on 0870 60 60 828 for further assistance. Non-members should consider the particular benefits of membership at this time: call the membership department on 020 7383 6955 or email membership@bma.org.uk.
